Managing Thoughts with Mindfulness

Journey to Self E09 was a super special as the reader of this episode, Mr. Ranjeet Ranjan, shared learnings from two books, yes you read it right and he kept the names of the book’s suspense till the end of the session. This was a very unique way of sharing and as we always say, it’s not the book but how the reader presents it, also gives participants loads of learning.

He shared that these books came into his life when he needed them as one day while driving, he realized that he reached his destination and he didn’t realize which route he took, he felt the need to be mindful and as someone says when you seek something, it comes to you.

Think straight by Darius Foroux and the Miracle of Mndfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh. They seemed to strike a chord somewhere in terms of his approach towards life.

A key theme across the book that is extremely valuable and resonates with his thinking is to understand yourself. Find out what makes you happy and comfortable and lead your life that way. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone. live in the present, the past can’t be changed, and no one knows how the future is exactly going to play out. He explained in a very interesting way that we spend a lot of time in our head, thinking, worrying, stressing, freaking out.

Just think about how much you think.

· “I wonder what my boss thinks?”

· “What happens if I screw up and lose my job?”

· “What if my business never takes off?”

· “Does she love me?”

· “Why does my life suck?”

· “What if i get cancer?”

· “I can’t finish anything. what’s wrong with me?

and the list goes on.

99% of our thoughts are useless. “A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.”

He shared with us the concept of facts vs assumptions and how we assume a lot. he shared that our mind should work for us and not against us.

People who don’t master their minds say, “they can’t help but thinking these things”. Ranjeet shared that this book helps in improving our thinking.

You have the ability to decide what you think. or, you can choose not to think. think straight reveals the recipe for taking control of your mind so you can improve your life, career, relationships, business.

The mind is the most powerful tool on earth. Change the way you think. and you’ll change your life.

At the end of the day, this is your life and the only way you can live with yourself is to follow your strongest desires. just make sure you think straight so you eventually act on those thoughts” ― Darius Foroux.

How to achieve the above state of thoughts, was beautifully explained through the concept of mindfulness from the book titled, the miracle of mindfulness by Thich Nhat Hanh.

Just sit down, be one with your thoughts, observe them, and then, ignore them. that’s all to meditation.

Ranjeet shared some simple principles, exercises, and anecdotes which helps anyone to learn the skill of mindfulness, mindfulness-being awake and fully aware, he shared the author’s view that every single action holds a great opportunity, from washing the dishes, answering the phone, peeling an orange.

Each moment every moment no matter, how small or big it is, every moment holds an opportunity to work toward great self-understanding and peacefulness.

Every day and every hour, one should practice mindfulness.

Many people may think that it is easy to say to practice mindfulness, but it is hard to practice, hence to clear this question, ranjeet shared that every individual should reserve one day out of the week to devote entirely to their practice of mindfulness. Every day should be your day, every hour should be your hour, but hardly anyone reaches to such an impression because today every individual live a busy life and has an impression that our family, place of work, and society rob us of all our time.

Ranjeet shared an interesting practice that the author has shared in the book that every individual set one day a week for themselves, if you choose saturday your day, then it should be only your day, you should be the master of that day, then saturday will become the day which will lift you to the habit of practicing mindfulness.

It was great to learn that even the night of sleep doesn’t give the total rest. hence there is a need to realize the importance of total rest through meditation.

It is possible to find total rest in a sitting position, and in turn to advance deeper in meditation in order to resolve the worries and troubles that upset and block your consciousness.
